If you commission a painter for a portrait, you don’t direct every brushstroke. You choose the painter because of their eye, their hand, their judgment — and then you let that judgment work. It’s the same here. We start every commission by getting to know the person this piece is for — their character, their life, the details that mattered. From there, the creative process has to be allowed to move. We reserve the discretion to make the small decisions — a transition in grain, a finishing choice, a structural adjustment — that bring a design together the way it needs to, even when that means deviating slightly from an early sketch. This isn’t a loss of control. It’s the reason the result exceeds what a checklist could ever produce. You’re not managing a vendor. You’re trusting a craftsman.

We have built matching caskets for husbands and wives. Not matching in the catalog sense. Matching in the sense that both pieces come from the same timber, carry the same joinery, and speak the same visual language while being designed independently for the person each one is for. A cowboy coffin and a traditional casket, both in cherry and pine, the same two-tone layout — different forms, same lineage. A butcher-block pattern for her and solid walnut boards for him, both accented in wormy oak, both unmistakably from the same bench. We’ve built several of these. We don’t know of anyone else who has.
