Here in the heart of Western North Carolina, the rolling hills and fertile valleys hold more than just beauty; they whisper tales of Burley tobacco, a crop deeply woven into the very fabric of our communities for generations. It’s a story of hard work, tradition, and a way of life that demands respect. At Randolph’s Custom Caskets, we understand the profound weight of legacy, and sometimes, honoring it means giving remarkable stories—and their tangible echoes—a second life. Today, we’re sharing a bit of that enduring history with you, and how it connects to one of our most unique creations.

Burley tobacco farming isn’t simply about planting a seed and waiting for it to grow. It’s an art form, a demanding dance between human will and the rhythms of nature, a testament to unwavering patience and grit. Picture this: springtime in these mountains, the air thick with the promise of a good harvest. Tiny Burley tobacco seeds, finer than grains of sand, are meticulously sown in prepared beds. These “plant beds” are tended with exacting care until the seedlings gather the strength needed to face the elements.

Then comes the “setting”—the precise transplanting of those tender seedlings to the fields. Imagine rows upon rows stretching out under the Carolina sun, each plant a testament to hope and diligent effort. But the work is far from over. “Hoeing,” the back-breaking task of weeding, is a constant battle against nature’s unruly tendencies, demanding focus and endurance. Summer days are spent bent over, coaxing the Burley plants toward their full potential.

As the leaves mature, their vibrant green softens to a lighter, almost yellowish hue. This signals the time for “cutting.” Strong, skilled hands, wielding sharp knives, carefully harvest the entire stalk—a distinct process unlike the priming of flue-cured. These stalks are then deftly speared onto tobacco sticks, ready for their journey into the curing barn.

Inside the barn, the stalks hang in rows, like tapestries of a bygone era. For weeks, they undergo a quiet transformation, slowly air-curing until they come “in case.” This is where the profound magic happens, where the leaves develop their characteristic aroma and flavor. The Burley curing process, unlike flue-curing, relies solely on natural air circulation and demands a longer, patient wait.

Once cured, the leaves are “stripped” or “worked off” the stalk, a process requiring a delicate touch to avoid damage. Finally, the tobacco is “baled”—packed tightly into large bundles, ready for market. This intricate process, from seed to sale, represents the sweat equity, the very heart and soul, of countless families across Western North Carolina.

Now, you might be wondering, what does this deep-rooted tradition have to do with our craft? At Randolph’s, we believe in repurposing and profoundly honoring the past. We’ve meticulously crafted a truly special casket using reclaimed tobacco sticks from these very barns. Building this piece was particularly difficult for me. When I was a boy, one of the only whoopings my grandfather ever gave me was for breaking his tobacco sticks. While the couple of pops to the backside were nothing, it was the sheer disappointment in his eyes—disappointment over me carelessly destroying something—that truly stayed with me. So, with every cut we made on this casket, that vivid memory came flooding back. It served as a powerful reminder of the respect owed to these materials and the legacy they carry.

Imagine the stories these sticks could tell! The countless sunrises they’ve witnessed, the hands that have held them, the history they’ve quietly absorbed. This casket, built with these storied pieces of wood, is a tangible tribute to the hard work and heritage of our region. It’s our way of giving these materials a dignified second life, a final resting place that echoes the cycles of nature and the enduring spirit of the mountains.

It’s more than just a casket; it’s a piece of our shared history, transformed by our skill into something beautiful and enduring. At Randolph’s Custom Caskets, our commitment is to create pieces that are truly “Beyond the Extraordinary,” and this tobacco stick casket stands as a perfect example of that unwavering dedication.
